1. Alhuda Islamic Centre
The Al Huda Islamic Centre is a day care and madressa that was operated from an informal shack for 5 years. It is located in Philippi East, an impoverished area close to the R300 and N2 intersection on the outskirts of Cape Town. In 2017, Erf 6118, 10 Nomrwabayi Crescent, was acquired by the Gordons Bay Islamic Trust for the purposes of housing the center. In 2019 a boundary wall was erected around the property.

The property currently serves as a musalla and in 2020, the first full Quran was read in taraweeh. The center has seen a significant amount of reverts and houses a dahwah galqa for approximately 30 women every Saturday. The center feeds and teaches approximately 70 Children and has gained a respectable recognition in the community, serving as conduit for welfare distribution during the difficult times.
Alhuda also hosts weekend accommodation in an attempt to keep young children, who have become Muslim, in an Islamic environment as many lose their deen when they attend high school and do not attend madrassa anymore. This is particularly difficult as their extended families are not Muslim.
During the Covid 19 Pandemic of 2020, the Alhuda served as a distribution point for food. This was was a vital service to the local community as the countrie’s hard lock down resulted in the closing of many businesses resulting in severe job losses. This exacerbated food insecurity in an already impoverished community. The objective is to expand the centre to become a fully-fledged Darul Uloom where the Muslim children can live, attend high school and also gain the higher levels of Islamic knowledge. Effectively a “Darul Uloom New Castle” equivalent within the community that it intends to serve. It is expected that this can start small and will expand over time. There is also a critical mass of Ulama within the area that could potentially teach.
The long term plan is to run the first 3 years of the Aalim course along with the kids attending high school. After which they can pursue further academic studies in tertiary institutions or in the standard SA Darul Uloom or international one. (Malaysia, Madina)
The objective is to enroll the first batch of students in 2022. This will require the capital funds to build a Musalla next to the house. Various options are being considered to provide housing to students. A male cook will have to be employed and an additional teacher will have to be paid. In addition, there is also a need for Ghusl Khana as currently the Muslims have to travel to Athlone to fulfill this service.
